In 2015 we embarked on an ambitious and forward-looking campaign to keep Playhouse Square dazzling not just for years to come but for a generation to come the Advancing the Legacy Campaign. The story of the saving of the Playhouse Square theaters is almost legendary once opulent theaters fallen into ruin then saved from the wrecking ball by a small group of visionary courageous and dedicated local leaders. Thanks to those heroes and those who followed them we now enjoy one of the nations largest and most vibrant theater districts providing world-class entertainment to more than a million audience members every year. Today we are the stewards of an entire neighborhood with ten Playhouse Square stages a parking garage ofce buildings a hotel and other real estate holdings. We are the beneciaries of a great legacy and we have embarked on the Advancing the Legacy Campaign to honor and build upon it for those who will be the next generation of Playhouse Square guests. As each of Playhouse Squares great theater renovation projects reached completion the leadership of Playhouse Square might have declared our work to be done or our mission complete. They did not. Instead of complacency they chose heightened aspiration. The same will continue to be true when the Ohio Theatre lobby restoration is complete and that lobby is restored to its original glory. Our focus will be on creating a nancial foundation that will assure the maintenance and continuous enhancement of the theaters far into the future and one that will also enable us to continue to provide ever more extraordinary educational opportunities for children and their families. The appreciation for Playhouse Squares contributions to our region has spread far beyond Cleveland. This past April Forbes Magazine noted in its Great Urban Weekend Escapes It might come as a surprise but the number one appeal of Cleveland is its culture and entertainment across several levels. Very few folks realize that it is home to the nations second most vibrant theater district after New Yorks Broadway with fourteen sic major live stages in one concise spot Playhouse Square. Thats the biggest draw for the regional drive market with an ever-changing slew of top plays and musicals. Playhouse Square continues to evolve to meet the cultural educational and economic needs of the community and remain part of that number one appeal of Cleveland. We invite you to read the following 2014-2015 highlights that underscore what a creative and successful year we enjoyed. We extend our gratitude to those of you who share our belief in the importance of the Advancing The Legacy Campaign and have acted on that belief with a generous contribution. For those of you who have not yet done so we sincerely hope you will consider contributing to the campaign and helping secure the future for one of Clevelands greatest gems Playhouse Square. The Richard J. Fasenmyer Foundation contributed 10 million to the campaign in December 2014 the largest gift to the campaign and to the organization to date. The late Mr. Fasenmyer served on the board of trustees and was deeply committed to the continued success of Playhouse Square. In March 2015 the George Gund Foundation announced their commitment of 3 million to support the restoration of the Ohio Theatre lobby to its 1921 splendor which will be renamed in honor of the Foundation. The rst of the ve historic Playhouse Square theaters to be restored the Ohio Theatre was badly damaged by re in 1964. During its early 1980s renovation funding and time would not allow both the auditorium and lobby to be fully refurbished. While the auditorium was restored a simple contemporary design was created for the lobby. Its original appearance will now be recreated as authentically as possible. Additional work undertaken since last years Report to the Community Restoration of the State Theatre lobby and auditorium Improvements to lighting and signage in the Playhouse Square parking garage New waynding system Restoration of the Hanna Theatre salon We recognize and thank those who have made the following gifts to the Advancing the Legacy Campaign 5000000 The Richard J.
